Religion: Some Basics

When people often hear the word “religion,” they automatically assume that the person has faith in something, but it is way more than that. I liked when Nye said, “‘religion’ means many different things, and so there are many different ways in which we can say something is ‘religious’”(17). Religion is more than what a person believes in, it is our cultures, our day-to-day tasks, our way of living. People often base their opinions on this from what they have heard from as they were growing up, whether it be from their parents, grandparents, or even social media. I grew up in an European country that used to be a part of USSR, growing up, I did not hear much about religion because that was not a big part of our “culture”. But as I was getting older, I started to hear more about it, I started to come to United States and hear about what people believe here and see how they live out their beliefs. If I had stayed in Latvia, my beliefs would never have been the same because I would not have been exposed to all that the different cultures have to offer. I already knew so much about religion just because I had seen it and heard it before, but this course is giving me more knowledge to back up my beliefs, but also to understand other peoples beliefs and their cultures. Religion is way more than going to church, and rituals, and having faith, it is a community of people that are trying to understand the meaning and workings of life, just in different ways. #IntroRelUH
